Sema Ventures: What's in a Name?

· Personal,Reflection

A name carries weight. It should mean something, spark curiosity, and set the tone for what’s to come. "Sema Ventures" wasn’t chosen at random—it reflects deep roots, intentionality, and a philosophy that underpins everything I do.

So, why "Sema"?

Sema (tobacco) is the most sacred plant in Potawatomi tradition. It is used in ceremonies as an offering to carry prayers and expressions of gratitude to the Creator and the heavens. It represents respect, connection, and the importance of reciprocity—values ingrained in Potawatomi culture. An elder once said, "Sema precedes all things," signifying its role in blessings, ceremonies, and gatherings. The act of offering sema is not just about asking for guidance but also about expressing appreciation for what has been received.

When I founded Sema Ventures, LLC in 2017 as my first company, I wanted the name to serve as a reminder of my connection to my heritage as a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. Sema Ventures has remained the umbrella for every venture I’ve explored—spanning technology, aviation consulting, sales, product and marketing design, and photography. More than just a business, it is a reflection of my journey and the values I strive to uphold.

Through all of my endeavors and success, I want to be reminded to share gratitude.
